Bio: A once flourishing coffee producing country, El Salvador is making a strong comeback following years of disruptions resulting from a civil war that all but eliminated the country’s global trade presence. Now the coffee industry in this beautiful country is focused on growth and quality improvement, concentrating efforts on specialty arabica varietals and excellence in production. We are excited to introduce our newest alliances from El Salvador, Finca Nogales and Finca San Rafael, both owned by the family company, Aviles Pacas Hermanos.
Finca Nogales is a majestic property located in the Potrero Grande Arriba, on the slopes of the Santa Ana volcano. The farm has a great tradition in the production of coffee and has historically been know as a model farm for the area, due to its high productivity (70 qq / mz), as well as being a farm exhibiting a keen sense of social responsibility and source of work for the surrounding communities. In recent years, however, due to the impact of low coffee prices, aging plantations and significant damage from coffee leaf rust (roya) , farm productivity fell off sharply, dropping to 3 qq per mz. As a result, in 2014 the company made the decision to undergo a total renovation of the plantation, with a focus on quality and recovering productivity. Their adopted four-year renovation plan progressively replaces the old crop exclusively with bourbon (red and pink) varietals.
